Sol is a painting of a lone tree standing at the rim of a drop-off, caught in the last light of a setting sun. Painted in oil with thick, impasto strokes, the canopy glows gold and orange from behind — lit not despite the shadow falling away behind it, but because of it, the darkness giving the light something to burn against. It’s a quiet study in backlight and contrast, and in what becomes visible only when we’re willing to stand at the edge of things.
“Sol” was created on 3/4″ canvas, with the painting continued around the edges.
