I’m just over two hours from the Grand Canyon, and it has never once failed to take my breath away.
This one isn’t painted from the rim, though. It’s from the trail, on the way back out — the switchbacks, the light falling in patches through a lone wind-bent pine, the path disappearing around a bend you can’t yet see past.
I didn’t realize until I sat with it afterward that I’d painted the return, not the descent. There’s a whole piece I wrote about what that ended up meaning to me — more than I expected from one afternoon on a trail. If you’re curious, you can read it here.
